Dr. Goheen, How did you get started in this work?
A. I have had an interest in community development work, locally and globally for over 30 years. I completed a Masters Degree in Community Development in the late 1960’s with a class of students from around the world. My first work was in rural community development.
Q. When and how did Global Institute get started?
A. In the mid 1980’s a number of circumstances came together resulting in the founding of Global Institute. As chairman of world community service for Rotary District 504 (North West Washington, Greater Vancouver up to North of Prince George B.C.) I had the opportunity of representing Canadian Rotary on the Philippine Development Assistance Program. This was a special program put together by the Canadian Government to help the Philippines after Marcos was thrown out of power. During that period I helped put together some very ambitious watershed development programs. Some of the projects were sponsored by Rotary and in some cases by Global Institute which I had founded while working with the University of British Columbia [U.B.C.]. During this period I was also involved in many projects in Honduras, Central America involving water, health, agriculture, schools etc.

The paper nest is carefully taken apart layer by layer and applied to surfaces. The finished product resembles marble but is textured.
I started working with the paper nest that the hornet makes about 5 years ago. The technique has taken some perfecting. It may look as easy as applying an adhesive and then applying the nest paper, but let me assure you there is more to it than that.
I am always asked whatever gave me the idea. I had a large inactive nest hanging on my back porch when a friend's son asked me what I was going to do with it? I told him I didn't know yet and as I said that I reached up and tore off a peice of the paper from the nest and held it up to my eyes.......it was like looking thru a silk scarf. I could see thru it but still see the design of the paper nest and I thought.....I wonder what this would like papiermached onto something?!

OBJECTIVES AND INTENTIONS
Chris Hill (known in the Canadian electronic music industry as dj CHill), formed Octave Music Group as “a conscious, resonant collective promoting innovative musicians”. Chris has been successfully involved with initiating, producing and performing at numerous tribal gatherings, music festivals and fundraisers throughout Canada for 13 years. A group of several local and international musicians, artists and dj’s have collectively networked with Octave Music Group during this time, residing throughout Canada and the Pacific Rim. Octave’s goal is to activate this network during the caravan and collaborate on events and share production concepts. While initiating and collaborating with organizers we will consistently focus on more spiritual and eco-education celebrations.
The Mycorrhiza Collective’s first project in summer 2000, involved a tour with the Sierra Club of B.C focusing on raising awareness about the Great Bear Rainforest. In April 2001 the Mycorrhiza Collective received word that 1.5 million acres of Earth’s largest remaining, intact temperate rainforest had been preserved. It is the Mycorrhiza’s intention to catalyze this effort further and carry on the momentum of the Green Tao down the Pacific Rim. It is Octave’s intention to recruit the most eclectic and innovative artists from each region while collaborating with promoters holding our concepts and dreams high.

Nepal is a place of spectacular extremes. The land rises from the hot, low-lying Terai plains to the peak of Mt. Everest, the highest point on the planet. The streets of Kathmandu are clogged with traffic and studded with ancient temples where every morning the local people serenely make offerings, ringing temple bells over the honking of horns, lighting incense amid diesel exhaust. In alleys tucked between cybercafes, children disabled by polio beg for rupees.
Foreign visitors come to Nepal to go trekking, and they return deeply shaken by the strength, poverty, and indomitable spirit of the people they encountered on their treks. They are struck by beauty of the children beneath their rags. They return home agreeing with the claim, "Visit Nepal and your life will be changed."
